At Suburban Water Systems, our mission is to provide safe, dependable water services to our customers while fostering strong community partnerships and keeping costs affordable. The Painter & Wheatland Pipeline Replacement Project exemplifies our commitment to this mission, showcasing how we proactively address aging infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted service and minimal disruption to residents.
Infrastructure Renewal Today for Continued Reliable Service Tomorrow
Our water distribution pipelines are the lifelines that supply potable water for drinking, household use, irrigation, and fire protection. With time, these pipelines deteriorate, increasing the potential for breaks and service interruptions. We identify pipelines nearing the end of their useful life and replace them with robust, long-lasting alternatives, safeguarding uninterrupted service for decades to come.
Innovative Customer Solutions for Cost Savings
We encountered a unique challenge in the neighborhood surrounding Painter Avenue and Dittmar Drive in Whittier. The pipelines serving this neighborhood date back to the 1950s and are in the narrow space between houses. Originally, we had planned to install a new pipe through Dittmar Drive to replace the pipe running between houses. This was going to require approximately 600 feet of pipeline. However, a creative solution emerged to reroute
this connecting pipe through Kennedy Park’s parking lot next to Wheatland Avenue. This alternative reduced pipeline length to just 270 feet, cutting project costs, and minimizing disruptions during construction.
Seamless Collaboration with the City
Effective communication with the City of Whittier was pivotal to this project’s success. Our cost-efficient Kennedy Park route proposal aligned with the city’s plans to reconstruct the park’s parking lot in early 2024. By coordinating our efforts, we reduced our paving replacement costs.
Efficiency in Action
Initially planned for construction in 2024, we pivoted to meet the City of Whittier’s timeline and divided the project into two phases. We completed the Phase 1 pipe project in Painter and Wheatland in one week in December 2023. Phase 2 is scheduled for completion early in 2024. Our proactive approach and flexibility reflect our steadfast commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and affordable water service to our community.
