We strive to provide residents with superior customer service at all times. Whether you need assistance setting up a new account, have a question about your bill, or need to report an emergency, we’re here to help.
The goals of our Cross-Connection Control/Backflow Prevention Program exist to safeguard the public water system against potential contamination from backflow.
Backflow is the reversal of the normal flow of water. It can happen when a drastic change in water pressure occurs. To protect your water system, backflow prevention devices are required for all water connections.
If a source of contamination is connected to a plumbing system when backflow occurs– such as a fertilizer dispenser on a hose– those contaminants could get siphoned back into the home or building’s plumbing system, and potentially, our public water lines.
That’s why state and federal regulations require water systems to identify cross connections between the public water system and private plumbing systems and take steps to prevent backflow through these cross connections.
Annual Testing of Backflow Preventers
Our customers must meet the Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) requirements. We require all backflow prevention devices to be tested immediately after installation and after repairs of any kind are made. All commercial devices are required to be tested at least once annually and residential devices require testing once every two years.
All field tests must be preformed by a DHEC-Certified Tester. For more information on backflow, please contact our backflow testing team at SC-Backflow@swwc.com.
