In 2004, SouthWest Water Company acquired 10 systems in Henderson County in East Texas from TECON Water Holdings. Since then, we have made many improvements to bring the systems up to state standards, improving water quality and quantity, and improving wastewater systems.
At acquisition, SouthWest Water uncovered a health hazard in the systems’ water—Trihalomethanes, a by-product of chlorination that has been linked to health problems. We invested significant time and resources to correct this issue.
In addition to water quality improvements, SouthWest Water updated wastewater systems in Henderson County.
Specifically, in Beachwood Estates, SouthWest Water spent more than $1.6 million in 2009 to replace a sewer treatment plant that was a potential environmental problem.
In Cherokee Shores, SouthWest Water spent more than half a million dollars in 2008 to change the treatment strategy and replace old equipment. The plant was not originally designed to remove nitrogen from the water. SouthWest Water purchased and installed new equipment to improve the process.
In Henderson County, SouthWest Water Company has invested more than $4.5 million.
